Ambroise de Sudbaye is an albino boy born into nobility on the southern coast of France. The Roman Catholic Church marks this as a sign of God. He is worshipped, feared, and adored in extreme; there is nobody in Europa who has not heard of him. He himself is an eccentric terror; his family is no better. As the events of his adolesence unfold with increasing horror, another character-- an Italian painter known only as 'Antonello'-- comes into play. If things were bad before, they are about to get worse. Art is the only thing more powerful than god. Everyone knows this.
