The ocean is vast and unforgiving. Though we have tried to conquer it, the tide still topples ships and drowns. The sea is angry-- though, can we truly blame it? O, oceanic ruins, how unfathomably beautiful you are!

THE MOTHER

THE MOTHER is a very strange creature. With teeth as sharp as daggers and skin as pale as moonrays, she is a sailor's nightmare personified. As mighty and imposing as a giant squid, as horryifing as an angler fish, as elusive as the Kraken, as eldritch as Cthulu; she is unknowable. There is a cavern where her skull should be. Where she came from is uncertain in every sense of the word. Legend has it that she resides somewhere in Alaskan waters. Those who have seen her with their own eyes have not lived to tell the tale; that is, all but one...

PEMORTI

Pemorti are beings that are, to an extent, immortal. That isn’t to say they cannot die; rather, they cannot be killed. They can pass of old age. However, if they are, say, shot through the skull, their body will regenerate over a 24-hour period, and they will return to whatever state they were in before the fatality. (The regeneration process is visually similar to the process featured in the family of Resident Evil 7; it’s certainly just as unsightly.) There is a very important catch, though: the Permorti will feel every second of that agonizing pain, and they will recall it in perfect detail, as no permanent brain damage means, in turn, no memory loss. Not only this, but any injury they sustain that is not fatal, but is still extremely dangerous (ie; a very deep laceration wound) will not regenerate the same as the rest of their body. Shallow wounds will heal as good as new. All Pemorti are infertile. Their “birth” is actually a very interesting process; THE MOTHER constructs dolls out of fishbone— with the shape of, for example, a matryoshka doll (though they are the size of an average infant)— and fills it with seawater. She even goes as far as to paint them. Then, she leaves these dolls on the doorsteps of families already expecting a child. For this reason, most Pemorti are technically twins, triplets, etc., despite not having any true blood relatives. Their appearances often match their “siblings’” very closely. Once the other, human child is born, the head of the doll will pop off. Inside is nested an infant Pemorti. Thankfully, this is a well-documented occurrence that many are aware of. This means that the Pemorti are often taken in and cared for, or, at the very least, put up for adoption.
